报告人简介:

Keith D. Koper is professor of geophysics and director of the seismological observatory at the University of Utah. He received a BA in math, geology, and ISP from Northwestern University in 1993 and a PhD in geophysics from Washington University in 1998. Dr. Koper was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Arizona during 19982001 and assistant/associate professor at Saint Louis University from 2001 until his arrival in Utah in 2010. His research interests include array seismology; Earth's ambient seismic noise field; forensic seismology; rupture imaging of giant earthquakes; seismicity and tectonics of the intermountain West; mining induced earthquakes; and the structure and dynamics of Earth's deep interiorespecially the core. Prof. Koper has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articlesincluding Science, Nature, Nature Geoscience, and his research has been funded by the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Science Foundation, the Dept. of Energy, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. He is former vice-chair and chair of the Utah Seismic Safety Commission and recently finished a term as the founding editor-in-chief ofThe Seismic Record.

报告内容摘要:

Modern broadband seismometers are extremely sensitive, detecting ground motion at the nanometer scale, and they record continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, seismometers commonly record vibrations from a variety of non-earthquake sources, including explosions, collapses, avalanches, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other phenomena. The study of these non-earthquake sources is sometimes referred to as forensic seismology. Here, I describe seismic monitoring in the Intermountain West of the United States and review several forensic seismology “cases” involving mining, a key industry and an important component of the regional economy.
