中国科大地球与行星化学学术报告通知—刘勉

报告人简介：

刘勉，曾获南京大学学士、加拿大麦吉尔大学硕士和美国亚利桑那⼤学博⼠学位。1992年起就职美国密苏里大学，历任校董事会杰出教授、William H. Byler 杰出讲席教授、系主任。曾兼任中国科学院计算地球动⼒学重点实验室主任 (2013-2018)、Tectonophysics 主编 (2008-2015)、国际⼤地测量和地球物理学会地震与地球动⼒学委员会主席 (2017-2022)、国际岩⽯圈计划秘书⻓ (2019-2025)。2023 年获美国地质学会George P. Woollard Award (地球物理终身贡献奖)。2025年9月入职南方科技大学任讲席教授。主要研究方向是地球动力学，在Science、Nature等期刊发表论文100多篇。

报告摘要: Plate convergence does not necessarily lead to mountain building. This talk demonstrates that pre-orogenic weakening of the lithosphere controls both the rise and lateral expansion of orogens. Our findings indicate that pre-existing lithosphere weakness constrains the development of the Andean orogen, and the lateral growth of the Tibetan Plateau has been confined to the inherited weak terranes. Synorogenic delamination and convective thinning effectively contribute to mountain building only when the mantle lithosphere is sufficiently weak. These results underscore the importance of incorporating pre-orogenic geological processes into models of mountain formation.
