报告地点:教学行政楼706会议室

报告人简介:

Dr. Gregory Michael is a research professor at the Institute of Geochemistry CAS, Guiyang, China since 2023. He obtained a dual Master degree in computer science and physics at the University of Oxford, and a PhD degree from Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia. Since then he has worked as a researcher at ESA, DLR Berlin and Freie Universitaet Berlin before joining IGCAS in China. Dr. Michael’s research focuses on crater counting as a tool for understanding the chronology of planetary evolution and has been the key developer for the widely-used CraterStats software. Dr. Michael has been a co-I on several planetary science instruments including Mars Express HRSC, ExoMars PanCam, JUICE JANUS and TGO CaSSIS instruments and served as reviewer for Icarus, JGR, P&SS, Nature Communications, MNRAS, etc.

报告内容摘要:

Crater count dating is a key methodology for interpreting the evolution of planetary surfaces and the history of the geological processes which drive it. As ever more planetary data is acquired, the focus of interest has shifted from planet-scale features to smaller and also younger geological formations. Such measurements often push to the limit of the available chronological information, necessitating a more refined approach to data analysis. This talk will relate the fundamentals of the technique and address some of the recent challenges and advancements. The talk will also include practical guidance on the usage of CraterStats software.
