Yongli Zhou is a marine biogeochemist focusing on carbon cycling. He grew up in a coastal city, Jiangmen, in the southern part of China. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science and Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China. Studying the biogeochemical fate of organic carbon from tropical peatlands in the coastal ocean, he earned his PhD from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2021. He recently joined the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole in the US as a postdoctoral researcher, working on model simulation of carbon fluxes in tidal wetlands. Soccer is his favorite.

The biogeochemical fate of terrigenous organic carbon at land-ocean interfaces is a critical issue because it can cause significant impacts on coastal ecosystems. In Southeast Asia, a hotspot of terrigenous organic carbon export from peatlands into the ocean, our multi-year field observation survey showed that 60 - 70% of this organic carbon flux is rapidly remineralized within the coastal waters. Photochemical degradation is a quantitatively important driver as revealed by our incubation experiments and model simulation. This extensive remineralization of organic carbon is causing a seasonal ocean acidification of an up to 0.15-unit drop in pH and fueling strong sea-to-air CO2 emissions in the region. To better predict coastal carbon emissions, we are currently building a model representation for soil biogeochemistry associated with tidal cycles, seasonality of salinity, and plant-mediated gas transport for tidal wetlands based on observation data from the Parker River estuary in northeast Massachusetts. This work will connect the subsurface carbon biogeochemistry with the ecosystem-scale carbon fluxes and enable us to predict how these carbon fluxes will respond to future climate change scenarios.
